U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar juggles motherhood with her political career.
The 44-year-old politician made history as the first Somali-American, Muslim woman to hold public office in the U.S. after she was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2016. Three years later, she assumed office as a U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
In a 2017 piece for TIME, Omar said her upbringing influenced her approach to motherhood after growing up in a household where men and women were treated equally.
“They truly believe that they have something to contribute to society and that it is an obligation as humans. I try to embed in my children that they have something to contribute. And that you give because you have to, not to be appreciated,” she said.

Omar shares three children with her former husband Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi.
The two entered a religious marriage in 2002 and welcomed daughter Isra in 2003 and son Adnan in 2005 before separating in 2008. She then married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, but they separated in 2011 without having children together.
Omar later reconciled with Hirsi and gave birth to their youngest daughter, Ilwad, in 2012. After finalizing her divorce with Elmi, Omar legally married Hirsi in January 2018, but they divorced in November 2019.
“As with all marriages, this is intensely personal and a difficult time for their family,” Jaime Driggs, Omar’s attorney, said after her divorce from Hirsi. “For years, Ilhan and Ahmed have been the object of speculation and innuendo from political opponents and the media. This has taken a significant toll on Ilhan, Ahmed, and their three children. Just like any other family navigating this kind of transition, Ilhan wishes to have their privacy respected for themselves and their children and will not be commenting any further.”

Omar has discussed motherhood and raising her children in several interviews over the years.
When asked about her proudest achievement from 2017 during a 2018 interview, she compared the demands of serving in public office to raising children.
“Surviving,” she said. “You can’t plan how things will work out after you get elected. It has been a year of extreme pressure. It’s hard, when you are personally affected by policies, to continue to fight and shift the narrative and get people involved when you want to hide under a pillow.”
Omar continued, “It’s like motherhood: no matter how sick or sad you are, you know you need to be strong. You need to show up. But I would also say that I am proud of the legislation I’ve been able to put forth. For the first time, we’re able to get funding for infrastructure, and that creates a lot of jobs for our district. I feel really lucky as a freshman legislator to be able to bring the lion’s share of that bonding appropriation to our district.”
She added that being a mother “was really good training” for her to prepare her for the challenges of being a legislator.
” I know that I am privileged to at least have a voice and to actively do something, whereas many of my constituents, who are also impacted, don’t. And so I needed to be strong for them, and I needed to carry that torch and make sure things would be OK for them,” said Omar.
